Everyone cries–whether it is from a rough day, an emotional movie, physical injury, or so many other things. For some, crying can be embarrassing act; however, these facts are things you should not be embarrassed about.
To begin, there are three different type of tears: basal, reflex, and psychic (which are triggered by emotions). All of these tears are contained in salt water. Other substances are prevalent in this salt water. These other substances include: oils, antibodies, and enzymes.
Emotional tears, out of the other types of tears, are the ones you can benefit the most from. Emotional tears contain, “the protein prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormones, and the endorphin leucine-enkephalin, which reduces pain,” says Medical Daily.
Emotional tears can even help reduce stress! Emotional tears evacuate chemicals that raise cortisol–the stress hormone–which benefits you!
An interesting study about tears is from in the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science written by Lauren Bylsma and her collaborators. They concluded this, after analyzing more than 3,000 reports of crying episodes:
“Consistent with previous field studies, the majority of participants reported mood benefits after crying. However, respondents showed significant variation in their reporting of mood benefits, with a third reporting no mood improvement and a tenth even reporting feeling worse after the crying. Importantly, variation in social-environmental factors tracked the mood benefits of crying: Criers who received social support during their crying episode were more likely to report mood benefits than were criers who did not report receiving social support. Likewise, mood benefits were more likely when the precipitating events of a crying episode had been resolved than they were when the events were unresolved.”
The thing that caught my attention the most was this: “Criers who received social support during their crying episode were more likely to report mood benefits than were criers who did not report receiving social support.”
Crying is still a big piece of human nature in and past and present. It is an evolved behavior that lowers defenses to be a mutual exhibit to others as your call for help. Through this act, a group is strengthened together coherently.
After learning this, you should not be ashamed next time you cry! It may even benefit you!
