This post isn’t just about one person. No, this post is about anyone and everyone who has been disrespected on the internet to the point where they’ve felt belittled, ignored, or uncomfortable.
First let me say that it upsets me to see people (especially people who are kind, generous, loving, and passionate) treated like crap. Whether it’s in person or on the internet, I think the fact that people are treated so poorly sucks. There is nothing wrong with voicing your opinion, but there is a huge difference between voicing your opinion and being an a**hole! If someone writes something and you disagree, fine. I think that you should be able to voice your opinion and hell, if you want to get mad because you feel strongly about the issue, that’s fine – you’re entitled to your opinion.
However, as I said, there’s a difference between expressing yourself in a mature, passionate matter and making others feel like sh*t because they don’t agree with you. I’m not a big fan of the word ‘bullying’ because it’s so overused today, but I do believe in being kind and considerate. Period.
This post is also for all the people who have been scared for their safety online because of how people have treated them or spoken to them. I’m sorry that there are people out there who try to take advantage of others.
I think it’s horrible that amazing and talented people aren’t spreading their talents with the world (or have decided to stop doing so) because they don’t feel comfortable doing so. We should all feel safe enough in this world to share our feelings, emotions, and opinions both in person and online without being belittled or put down for them as long as our thoughts and feelings are not cruel or harmful to others.
So to those who are being put down for sharing your kind, loving, and considerate opinions, please try not to allow those who are cruel make you stop doing what you love – sharing your thoughts and speaking out against injustice. To those who are cruel and belittling others – STOP! If you want to voice your opinion, fine, but do so in a calm and considerate way. If you can’t do that, then move on and don’t say anything!

I have seen way too much of this lately especially in the book community on twitter. Readers are being shamed and called racist for their opinions on books. There hasn’t been much productive discussion at all, some people just go straight into attack and judge mode without asking questions first.

Well, I don’t know what their comments are (obviously if they’re racist, that’s not good), but you are right that some people judge others way too soon. Thanks for reading.

Your welcome, and some of the people that are being called racist aren’t even racist at all, they’re just being misjudged for their opinions.

Could you give me an example of their opinions? Just curious.

Someone was called racist because of their opinions on a character in an own voices book.

Well, in my opinion, it wouldn’t be racist unless the person didn’t like the character BECAUSE he/she was black. I don’t know the exact context though, so it’s hard to say. I do agree with you though that sometimes people are far too quick to place judgement.

The reader thought that a character was immature.

Well as long as they didn’t think that he or she was immature due to their race, I don’t see anything racist about that! Just because a character happens to be of a different race and you don’t like them, doesn’t make you racist!

It had nothing to do with race. And exactly!
